The Memorial Scholarship Foundation awards descendants of current and deceased Vietnam veterans of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Battalions of the 47th Infantry Regiment with funds for attending any 2- or 4-year college, university, vocational/technical school or other qualified institution of higher education. A minimum of one (1) $3,000 scholarship will be awarded annually. The Scholarship Committee awards applicants who (a) meet eligibility requirements and (b) rank highest in total criteria score.

Award Guidelines

In accordance with our constitution and by-laws, the Memorial Scholarship Foundation is obligated to award the greater of (a) 10% of the Scholarship Fund balance as of the date of award, or (b) $3,000, to a qualified applicant (or applicants).

 

Applicant Review

The Scholarship Committee meets in person or via conference call at least once each year to review applications and to make awards based on the selection criteria set forth in the Eligibility Requirements. The applicants selected as awardees are notified immediately and receive their scholarship funds prior to the start of the fall semester of their enrollment.

Eligibility Requirements

The committee reviews each application thoroughly. In order to qualify, all applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

1. Submit a Scholarship Foundation Application, either online or by US mail, complete with all required attachments. Applications must be postmarked by July 1 of the year for which they are being considered.

2. Be a descendant or relative of a 47th Infantry Vietnam veteran. This includes, but is not limited to, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, adopted children, stepchildren, nieces, nephews, step-nieces and step-nephews. Applicants must provide evidence of relationship to the veteran and documentation regarding the unit of the 47th Infantry Regiment with which service occurred (such as a copy of the veteran's DD-214, a listing on the 2/47th website, etc.), and approximate dates of service (for example, 1968-1969).

3. Be (a) a graduating high school senior, (b) a high school graduate, (c) a college student, OR (d) an honorably discharged military veteran planning to enroll in a course of study at an accredited institution of higher education. This includes, but is not limited to, vocational/technical school, 2 or 4 year college, university, nursing or medical school).

Selection Criteria

Qualified applicants who meet the Eligibility Requirements are ranked by the committee according to the selection criteria (see table). The highest-ranked applicant(s) will be awarded the scholarship. Decisions regarding recipient(s) are the sole determination of the committee.

Award Notification

The Chairman of the Scholarship Committee will notify selected recipient(s) on or before September 1st. Scholarship checks will be made payable directly to each recipient following receipt of evidence of the awardee's intent to enroll at the chosen institution of higher education (i.e., a letter of acceptance on the institution’s letterhead).
